Recently we visited the open day at the Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam, for the benefit of our nine year old daughter. Ever since she has known what an art academy is, she has said: that’s where I’m going.
‘You’re our youngest visitor today,’ one of the hosts said, a friendly fellow with a big bushy beard and some painful looking piercings. We checked out all the various departments, from graphic design to fabric work. But it was the drawing and painting department that held her attention most. ‘There are so many drawings in my head waiting to come out,’ she said.
Soon we’ll be moving her into a new room, a bigger one. With a large work table where those drawings can start to see the light of day.
